Ardbeg 26 Years Old 1994 (Cadenhead’s)

A senior expression from Cadenhead's 1994 Ardbeg programme, bottled at 26 years in 2021. The 1994 vintage represents the very last full production cohort before Allied Distillers's final 1996 closure of Ardbeg, making Cadenhead's deep 1993 to 1994 archive one of the most comprehensive independent runs of late Allied era Ardbeg.

Filled into refill bourbon hogshead in 1994 during Allied's final production years and matured for twenty six years before bottling in 2021 at 47.4% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour. The 47.4% reading after more than two and a half decades reflects steady ethanol loss through the maritime warehouse cycle, where humidity drives alcohol attrition ahead of water across long maturation.

Twenty six years of refill bourbon maturation builds developed oak expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) reach expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1994 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) have undergone substantial oxidative conversion, shifting the smoke register toward leather, tarred rope and seasoned bonfire ash. At reduced ABV the polyphenols and acid compounds express more freely than at cask strength.
