Ardbeg 25 Years Old 1993 (Cadenhead’s)

An older expression from Cadenhead's long running 1993 Ardbeg programme, bottled at 25 years in Spring 2019 with filling code 19/0411. The 25 year point sits among the senior expressions in the long arc of Cadenhead's 1993 Ardbeg programme, which has run from the 2004 quartet of 10 year olds through to a 29 year bottling reaching around 1,000 GBP at release.

Filled into refill bourbon hogshead in 1993 during Allied Distillers's intermittent reopening and matured for twenty five years before bottling in Spring 2019 at 51.6% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour, 216 bottles drawn at natural strength. The 51.6% reading after a quarter of a century sits at typical natural strength for refill bourbon maturation in the maritime warehouse cycle.

Twenty five years of refill bourbon maturation builds developed oak expression. Cis and trans oak lactones (coconut, oiled wood) reach expressive concentration, hemicellulose breakdown furans deliver caramel and toasted almond, and lignin vanillin and syringaldehyde layer vanilla and baking spice. The 1993 Allied era peat phenols (guaiacol, syringol, 4 methylguaiacol, p cresol) have undergone substantial oxidative conversion across two and a half decades, shifting the smoke register toward leather, tarred rope and seasoned bonfire ash.
