Description
Cask #2396, an early Italian market release from Ardbeg's 1976 vintage, bottled in 2002 just five years after Glenmorangie completed the acquisition. The 1976 stock had been held by Hiram Walker for the blended Scotch programme, and the new owners began a systematic audit and release process from 1997 onwards. The 2002 single cask releases mark an early phase of the programme when casks were still being identified and released individually rather than vatted into core range bottlings.
Filled into oloroso sherry butt in 1976 during the Hiram Walker years and matured on Islay for twenty six years through the 1981 mothball, the brief late 1980s reopening, the 1996 final Allied Distillers closure, and the early Glenmorangie revival. Bottled in 2002 at 53.5% ABV, non chill filtered with no added colour, preserving the full oxidative loading of the sherry cask.
Twenty six years in oloroso loads the spirit with melanoidins from Maillard reaction products in the impregnated staves, polyphenols (gallic acid, ellagic acid) from Spanish oak tannins, and rancio sotolon from long oxidative ageing. The 1976 peat phenols (guaiacol heavy, with 4 methylguaiacol and syringol present) bind to these sherry polyphenols and shift the smoke register toward leather, bitter cocoa, stewed fig and seasoned tobacco. The Ardbeg purifier ester signature persists beneath as orange peel and concentrated dried citrus, a marker of the distillery's stillhouse character from the Hiram Walker era.
