Whitley Neill Japanese Yuzu & White Strawberry Gin

    700 ml / 41.3%
    New Western

    $38

Tart Japanese yuzu meets the soft, mild sweetness of white strawberry, the two playing off each other in something bright and gently floral. Made in England by Whitley Neill, whose family has distilled since 1762, it pairs an exotic citrus with one of the more unusual fruits in any gin. Finely balanced and made for summer.

Whitley Neill built its name on globe-trotting botanicals, and this edition is a clear case in point: Japanese yuzu, all tangy citrus freshness, set against white strawberries, a rare fruit prized for its delicate, mild sweetness. Founded by Johnny Neill of a distilling family active since 1762, the house leans into experiment here, balancing the two fruits at 41.3% so neither the sharp nor the sweet runs away with the glass.

The nose is sweetish and fruity, white strawberry leading the way. The palate follows with that same gentle sweetness lifted by the bright citrus snap of yuzu, the strawberry softening and rounding the edges, before a long close. Serve it over ice in a summer gin and tonic with a Japanese-inspired tonic, or stir it into a creative cocktail with basil or a floral note.
