Description
White Oak 2016 Akashi HY is a single cask single malt from Eigashima Shuzo, distilled at the Hyogo distillery in 2016 and bottled in 2021 by independent bottler Hideo Yamaoka for the Japan domestic market. At 4 Years Old and cask strength 61.5% in a 500ml format, it departs from the Ex-Bourbon norm seen across the other Hideo Yamaoka Akashi releases by using Tawny Port cask maturation instead.
Tawny Port casks impart a distinctive oxidative richness, with dried red fruit, figs, and a nutty, caramelised sweetness that young malt absorbs quickly over four years. At cask strength the Port influence is direct and concentrated, giving this expression a fuller, more wine-saturated character than the Ex-Bourbon releases in the same series. It is one of the more unconventional single cask releases in the Hideo Yamaoka Akashi bottlings and reflects the broader cask programme that Eigashima applies to its single malt production.
