Saburomaru 2020, bottled in 2024 as a 4 Years Old expression, represents an additional year of maturation compared with the 2023 releases from the same vintage year. Wakatsuru Shuzo's Saburomaru distillery in Toyama prefecture has been issuing annual vintage single malts as part of its ongoing effort to document the character of each season's distillation across different cask periods.
Matured in bourbon casks, the extra year of wood contact beyond the standard 3 Years Old releases adds a layer of chocolate and dried fruit alongside the distillery's characteristic peat. The recorded profile shows chocolate, citric notes, dried fruit, a peat-driven oiliness, toasted oak and tobacco leaf, suggesting a spirit that has begun to integrate and round out at this age. Bottled at cask strength 48%, this 2020 vintage at four years is one of the more developed entries in the Saburomaru annual series.
