Description
The Tyrconnell remembers a racehorse that won the National Produce Stakes of 1876 at odds of a hundred to one for the Watt family, whose Derry distillery first bottled the brand. Revived by Cooley in Co. Louth, it is the distillery's unpeated double distilled single malt, and wine cask finishes like this 10 Years Old Port cask, bottled at 46% in 2019, are a house signature.
Ten years begin in ex-bourbon barrels before a finishing spell in Port casks paints red fruit and winey sweetness over the malt's citrus, fresh orchard fruit and vanilla. The 46% strength keeps the fruit vivid, cherry and plum against honeyed malt, a gently vinous take on one of Cooley's most admired lines.
