Description
This official Tomatin single malt, bottled at 46%. 9000 bottles in all. Tomatin is a Highland single malt distilled in the hills south of Inverness, where the distillery was founded in 1897. By 1974 Tomatin ran twenty three stills and was the largest malt distillery in Scotland.
It was run through the distillery's onion stills after a long fermentation, to build a fruity, gently spiced character. Ex-Sherry wood added a dried fruit richness to the soft make. No age is given, but the soft fruit marks it as Tomatin. The soft, fruity spirit takes cask character readily across maturation. It closed in 1906 and reopened in 1909, finding its feet over the following decades. The Antiquary blend came into the group through the blender J and W Hardie. Malt is bought in, the distillery's own floor maltings having closed in the 1980s. For most of its life the distillery rarely ran to its full capacity.
Reduced to 46%, it is soft. Orchard fruit and a gentle malt, and raisin and a nutty sherry depth build. It is gentle and fruity, the soft spirit shining through. A fruity, lightly spiced finish lingers. This is the soft, fruity Highland malt of Tomatin.
