Description
Single malt Tomatin, an independent Gordon & MacPhail bottling, a 12 year old from 2013, drawn from cask 3307 and bottled at 58.1%. A release of 243 bottles. Tomatin, founded in 1897 in the Highland village of the same name, was once Scotland's largest malt distillery. Cu Bocan takes its name from a spectral hound said to haunt the Tomatin hills.
Worked through onion stills for a light, fruity spirit, for the soft, fruity Highland make Tomatin is known for. It was matured in ex-Bourbon oak, lending vanilla and a soft honey. By this age the soft spirit rounds into orchard fruit and a gentle oak. Refill oak lets the fruity Tomatin character lead, apple over honey. Malt is bought in, the distillery's own floor maltings having closed in the 1980s. For most of its life the distillery rarely ran to its full capacity. The make is light and fruity, easy to like and easy to drink.
At its natural 58.1% it is concentrated. A mellow, fruity character, and the bourbon cask adds vanilla and a gentle sweetness. It is gentle and fruity, the soft spirit shining through. A fruity, lightly spiced finish lingers. This is the soft, fruity Highland malt of Tomatin.
