This is The Busker Single Grain as bottled for France, the same no age statement expression the Royal Oak distillery in Co. Carlow offers as one of four faces of its range. Grain whiskey comes off column stills lighter and sweeter than pot distilled spirit, and here it stands alone rather than disappearing into a blend.
Maturation runs through Bourbon casks and Sicilian Marsala wood, an uncommon pairing that sweetens the grain with vanilla and honey before the Marsala adds gentle dried fruit and a nutty finish. Bottled at 44.3%, a shade above the usual strength for the style, it keeps enough texture to sip neat while staying an obliging base for a highball.
