Description
From Cadenhead's comes this Tamnavulin, a 16 year old release from 2008 and bottled at 54%. The outturn was 204 bottles. Opened in 1966 during the whisky boom at Tomnavoulin, deep in Glen Livet, Tamnavulin is a light Speyside malt. It is one of the few distilleries that sits right on the River Livet.
Distilled in copper stills fitted with purifiers, for a light spirit, giving the soft, grassy spirit at its heart. A sherry cask gave a Christmas cake richness to the light spirit. Mid age brings a deeper honey and a riper orchard fruit. Years in oak round the spirit, the fruit and honey deepening with age. The name is Gaelic for mill on the hill, a nod to the old mill on its grounds. Tamnavulin sits in Glen Livet, close to Glenlivet, Braeval and Tomintoul. The light, clean make takes a cask finish particularly well. The site is home to one of Scotland's largest bat colonies.
At its natural 54% it is concentrated. The Manzanilla adds a dry, saline, nutty edge, and the refill oak lending honey and vanilla, with pear, hay and a floral lift. The texture is light and smooth, the fruit lifted by honey. The finish runs light, fresh and gentle. This is the mill on the hill malt of Glen Livet.
