Description
This official Springbank single malt, a 35 year old Campbeltown malt from 1968, drawn from cask 484 and bottled at 49.1%. A release of 213 bottles. Springbank is a Campbeltown distillery founded in 1828, prized for its rich, oily, hand made spirit. The distillery champions the old, slow, labour intensive way of making whisky.
It was floor malted, lightly peated and distilled two and a half times, and condensed in traditional worm tubs. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending vanilla and honey. Decades leave it waxy and oxidative, candied fruit and brine with great depth. Long maturation suits the heavy, characterful make, the cask knitting slowly with the spirit. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch. The distillery has become a place of pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts. Kintyre's damp, mild climate suits a long and gentle maturation.
At 49.1%, undiluted, it is deep and powerful. A coastal, waxy spirit with gentle peat meet creamy vanilla and oak sweetness from the cask. Beneath it run oily fruit, salt and a coastal depth. A long, oily, coastal finish lingers. This is the flagship malt of old Campbeltown.
