Description
This official Springbank single malt matured to 21 year old from 1992, drawn from cask 248 and bottled at 51.9%. 150 bottles in all. The Springbank distillery, a family distillery since 1828, is campbeltown's most revered surviving distillery. Bottles are released in small batches, often through ballots to meet the demand.
The make was distilled two and a half times from lightly peated, floor malted malt, the vapour cooled in worm tubs. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, gentle American oak beneath the spirit. Long ageing brings an oily depth, candied fruit and a mellow coastal salt. Everything is done on site, the spirit going from still to cask to bottle in Campbeltown. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries at its peak. Today just three distilleries survive in the old Kintyre whisky town. The maritime warehouses by the sea lend the malt its briny, oily depth.
At a natural 51.9% it is full and oily. An oily, maritime character with light peat are layered with creamy vanilla and oak sweetness. Soft fruit and brine sit behind the cask sweetness. It closes long, oily and salty. This is a revered Campbeltown single malt.
