Description
This official Longrow single malt, an 18 year old release and bottled at 46%. 4800 bottles in all. Springbank has distilled in Campbeltown since 1828, still owned by the Mitchell family, five generations on. It makes three malts: Springbank, the peated Longrow and the unpeated Hazelburn.
It was double distilled from heavily peated, floor malted barley, then condensed through worm tubs. Ex-Sherry wood suited the heavy make, adding a dried fruit richness. By this age the maritime weight rounds into a richer, fuller malt. Coastal warehousing gives the malt its briny, mineral lift. Today just three distilleries survive in the old Kintyre whisky town. The maritime warehouses by the sea lend the malt its briny, oily depth. A 1940s Porteus mill and an open iron mash tun are part of the old setup. The Mitchell family has held the distillery for five generations. The town and the sea run through every cask of the make.
Reduced to 46%, it is mellow. A tarry, maritime smoke meet dried fruit and a vanilla oak from the cask. A coastal salt and an orchard fruit lift it. It finishes deep, complex and maritime. This is a tarry, coastal Campbeltown malt.
