Description
This official Springbank single malt matured to 14 year old from 2003, drawn from cask Rotation 992 and bottled at 58.5%. 1 bottles in all. Springbank has distilled in Campbeltown since 1828, the most traditional distillery in Scotch, malting all its own barley. Hedley Wright's family has kept the distillery independent for the best part of two centuries.
It was given the part triple distillation unique to Springbank, and condensed in traditional worm tubs. A sherry cask wrapped the oily spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. Past a decade the oily spirit deepens, fruit and salt knitting with the oak. Worm tub condensing and an oil fired wash still build the rich, oily texture the distillery is known for. The Mitchell family has held the distillery for five generations. The town and the sea run through every cask of the make. The sea loch at the foot of the town shapes the coastal character of the malt.
At cask strength 58.5% it is muscular. A sherried dried fruit and nuts from the cask underpins oily orchard fruit, salt and a wisp of peat. Beneath it run oily fruit, salt and a coastal depth. It finishes deep, complex and maritime. This is the flagship malt of old Campbeltown.
