Description
An official Springbank single malt, aged 17 year old from 1978 and bottled at 46%. Springbank is a Campbeltown distillery founded in 1828, a byword for traditional Scotch whisky making. Campbeltown was its own protected whisky region long before the revival.
It was distilled around two and a half times from floor malted, lightly peated barley, and slowly worm tub cooled. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, gentle American oak beneath the spirit. By this age the maritime weight rounds into a richer, fuller malt. The hands on, small scale working shapes a spirit of real individuality. Few distilleries keep so much of the old craft alive under one roof. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries at its peak. Today just three distilleries survive in the old Kintyre whisky town. The maritime warehouses by the sea lend the malt its briny, oily depth.
At 46% it is supple and briny. A briny, oily depth with a hint of peat ride on vanilla, cream and light coconut. It is rich and layered, the fruit and salt well matched. The finish is long, waxy and briny. This is a hand made Campbeltown single malt.
