Description
This Springbank, an official release, a 9 year old Campbeltown malt from 2009 and bottled at 57.7%. Just 9700 bottles were filled. Springbank is a Campbeltown distillery founded in 1828, prized for its rich, oily, hand made spirit. Hedley Wright's family has kept the distillery independent for the best part of two centuries.
It was floor malted, lightly peated and distilled two and a half times, and condensed in traditional worm tubs. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. Still young, the malt is oily and robust with a coastal lift. Long maturation suits the heavy, characterful make, the cask knitting slowly with the spirit. The distillery has become a place of pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts. Kintyre's damp, mild climate suits a long and gentle maturation. The old town of Campbeltown once rivalled Speyside as Scotland's whisky heart. Quality and tradition, not volume, have always been the watchwords here.
At a natural 57.7% it is full and oily. A coastal, waxy spirit with gentle peat meet raisin, fig and a vanilla sweetness from the cask. Beneath it run oily fruit, salt and a coastal depth. A long, oily, coastal finish lingers. This is the flagship malt of old Campbeltown.
