Description
A distillery bottling of Springbank, an 8 year old Campbeltown malt from 2016 and bottled at 58.1%. 13500 bottles in all. Springbank is a Campbeltown distillery run by J and A Mitchell since 1828, famous for doing everything on site, from floor malting to bottling. The family owner also holds Cadenhead's, the oldest independent bottler in Scotland.
It was distilled around two and a half times from floor malted, lightly peated barley, with the spirit condensed in worm tubs. A sherry cask wrapped the oily spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. At a youthful age the make is lively, salty and full of character. A patient maturation suits the rich, complex Campbeltown spirit. The town and the sea run through every cask of the make. The sea loch at the foot of the town shapes the coastal character of the malt. Demand far outstrips the small output, and bottles are keenly chased. Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn each show a different face of the one distillery.
Undiluted at 58.1%, it is intense. Brine, wax and a light peat note sit over dried fruit and a vanilla oak. A waxy weight and a saline tang give it real body. The finish is long, waxy and briny. This is Springbank's rich, oily, maritime style.
