Description
This official Springbank single malt, an 8 year old release from 2018 and bottled at 58.1%. Just 1200 bottles were filled. Springbank is a Campbeltown distillery founded in 1828, prized for its rich, oily, hand made spirit. Hedley Wright's family has kept the distillery independent for the best part of two centuries.
It was floor malted, lightly peated and distilled two and a half times, and condensed in traditional worm tubs. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. Still young, the malt is oily and robust with a coastal lift. Long maturation suits the heavy, characterful make, the cask knitting slowly with the spirit. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries at its peak. Today just three distilleries survive in the old Kintyre whisky town. The maritime warehouses by the sea lend the malt its briny, oily depth.
At cask strength 58.1% it is muscular. A coastal, waxy spirit with gentle peat meet a sherried dried fruit and nuts from the cask. Beneath it run oily fruit, salt and a coastal depth. A long, oily, coastal finish lingers. This is the flagship malt of old Campbeltown.
