Description
An official Springbank single malt, a 32 year old from 1971 and bottled at 46%. The outturn was 2400 bottles. A family distillery since 1828, Springbank is a byword for traditional Scotch whisky making. The distillery sits in the heart of Campbeltown, near the head of its sea loch.
The spirit was drawn off after two and a half distillations of gently peated malt, with the spirit condensed in worm tubs. Ex-Sherry wood suited the heavy make, adding a dried fruit richness. At three decades and more it is rich and oily, tropical fruit, beeswax and salt in a deep, old malt. The hands on, small scale working shapes a spirit of real individuality. The town and the sea run through every cask of the make. The sea loch at the foot of the town shapes the coastal character of the malt. Demand far outstrips the small output, and bottles are keenly chased. Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn each show a different face of the one distillery.
At 46% it is supple and briny. A briny, oily depth with a hint of peat ride on dried fruit and a walnut richness. A waxy weight and a saline tang give it real body. Salt and oily fruit see out a long finish. This is Springbank's rich, oily, maritime style.
