Description
Glenscoma selected this Springbank, a 25 year old Campbeltown malt from 1990, drawn from cask 587 and bottled at 48%. The outturn was 215 bottles. The Springbank distillery, a family distillery since 1828, is campbeltown's most revered surviving distillery. Bottles are released in small batches, often through ballots to meet the demand.
The make was drawn off after two and a half distillations of gently peated malt, the vapour cooled in worm tubs. Ex-Bourbon casks held the spirit, soft oak that lets the make lead. Long ageing brings an oily depth, candied fruit and a mellow coastal salt. Everything is done on site, the spirit going from still to cask to bottle in Campbeltown. Quality and tradition, not volume, have always been the watchwords here. The spirit is filled to cask and matured within the distillery walls. Few distilleries keep so much of the old craft alive under one roof.
Undiluted at 48%, it is intense. A briny, oily depth with a hint of peat are layered with vanilla, cream and light coconut. Soft fruit and brine sit behind the cask sweetness. It closes long, oily and salty. This is the most traditional malt in Scotch.
