Description
A Springbank single malt, selected and bottled by Glenscoma, an 18 year old release from 2000, drawn from cask 900 and bottled at 56.3%. A release of 247 bottles. Springbank is a Campbeltown distillery run by J and A Mitchell since 1828, Campbeltown's most revered surviving distillery. Hedley Wright's family has kept the distillery independent for the best part of two centuries.
It was run two and a half times through the stills from lightly peated malt, and condensed in traditional worm tubs. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. Around the mid teens the malt gains depth while keeping its oily salt. Everything is done on site, the spirit going from still to cask to bottle in Campbeltown. The town and the sea run through every cask of the make. The sea loch at the foot of the town shapes the coastal character of the malt. Demand far outstrips the small output, and bottles are keenly chased.
At a natural 56.3% it is full and oily. A briny, oily depth with a hint of peat are layered with dried fruit, fig and walnut. Beneath it run oily fruit, salt and a coastal depth. A long, oily, coastal finish lingers. This is a complex, coastal Campbeltown whisky.
