Description
This official Springbank single malt, a 16 year old Campbeltown malt from 2000 and bottled at 45.5%. Only 204 bottles were released. The Springbank distillery, a family distillery since 1828, is campbeltown's most revered surviving distillery. Hedley Wright's family has kept the distillery independent for the best part of two centuries.
The make was distilled two and a half times from lightly peated, floor malted malt, and condensed in traditional worm tubs. A Rum cask shaped it, lending brown sugar and a tropical lift. Around the mid teens the malt gains depth while keeping its oily salt. Everything is done on site, the spirit going from still to cask to bottle in Campbeltown. Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn each show a different face of the one distillery. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch. The distillery has become a place of pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts.
At 45.5% it is clean and characterful. An oily, maritime character with light peat are layered with brown sugar, banana and a tropical lift. Beneath it run oily fruit, salt and a coastal depth. It closes long, oily and salty. This is the flagship malt of old Campbeltown.
