Description
This Springbank, an official release matured to 12 year old, drawn from cask Batch 16 and bottled at 56.3%. The outturn was 15000 bottles. A family distillery since 1828, Springbank is still owned by the Mitchell family, five generations on. Production is tiny by modern standards, a fraction of a large Speyside distillery.
The spirit was given Springbank's unusual two and a half times distillation, and run into cast iron worm tubs. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. Mid age brings a fuller fruit and a deeper coastal complexity. Coastal warehousing gives the malt its briny, mineral lift. The town and the sea run through every cask of the make. The sea loch at the foot of the town shapes the coastal character of the malt. Demand far outstrips the small output, and bottles are keenly chased. Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn each show a different face of the one distillery.
At 56.3%, undiluted, it is deep and powerful. A coastal, waxy spirit with gentle peat meet raisin, fig and a vanilla sweetness from the cask. It is deep and complex, the maritime spirit shining through. Sea salt and fruit draw out the close. This is the cult Campbeltown malt from J and A Mitchell.
