Description
An official Springbank single malt, a 12 year old Campbeltown malt, drawn from cask Batch 13 and bottled at 56.3%. Springbank is a Campbeltown distillery run by J and A Mitchell since 1828, famous for doing everything on site, from floor malting to bottling. Campbeltown was its own protected whisky region long before the revival.
It was distilled around two and a half times from floor malted, lightly peated barley, and slowly worm tub cooled. A sherry cask wrapped the oily spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. Past a decade the oily spirit deepens, fruit and salt knitting with the oak. A patient maturation suits the rich, complex Campbeltown spirit. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch. The distillery has become a place of pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts. Kintyre's damp, mild climate suits a long and gentle maturation. The old town of Campbeltown once rivalled Speyside as Scotland's whisky heart.
At a hearty 56.3% it carries real weight. Brine, wax and a light peat note sit over dried fruit and a vanilla oak. It is rich and layered, the fruit and salt well matched. The finish is long, waxy and briny. This is a hand made Campbeltown single malt.
