Description
An official Springbank single malt, a 12 year old release, drawn from cask Batch 1 and bottled at 54.6%. Only 6000 bottles were released. Springbank, founded in 1828 in Campbeltown, is famous for doing everything on site, from floor malting to bottling. The distillery sits in the heart of Campbeltown, near the head of its sea loch.
This was run through the distillery's part triple distillation, the malt floor malted and gently peated, with the spirit condensed in worm tubs. Ex-Sherry wood suited the heavy make, adding a dried fruit richness. Past a decade the oily spirit deepens, fruit and salt knitting with the oak. A patient maturation suits the rich, complex Campbeltown spirit. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch. The distillery has become a place of pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts. Kintyre's damp, mild climate suits a long and gentle maturation. The old town of Campbeltown once rivalled Speyside as Scotland's whisky heart.
At a hearty 54.6% it carries real weight. Brine, wax and a light peat note sit over a sherried dried fruit and nuts. A waxy weight and a saline tang give it real body. A warming, oily finish lingers long. This is Springbank's rich, oily, maritime style.
