Description
This Springbank, an official release, a 10 year old release from 2012 and bottled at 55%. 10800 bottles in all. Springbank, run by J and A Mitchell since 1828 in Campbeltown, is one of only three distilleries left in Campbeltown. Concerto barley is malted on the floors and kilned in the distillery's own kiln.
This was run through the distillery's part triple distillation, the malt floor malted and gently peated, then cooled slowly in worm tubs. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. At this age the spirit is vivid and oily, the fruit and salt to the fore. The oily, robust make carries cask flavour while holding its own character. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries at its peak. Today just three distilleries survive in the old Kintyre whisky town. The maritime warehouses by the sea lend the malt its briny, oily depth.
Bottled at a cask strength 55%, it is rich. Raisin, date and treacle meets a salty, waxy depth with a whisper of peat. The texture is rich and oily, the salt threaded through. A warming, oily finish lingers long. This is a complex, coastal Campbeltown whisky.
