Description
A distillery bottling of Springbank, a 10 year old Campbeltown malt and bottled at 43%. Springbank is a Campbeltown distillery founded in 1828, a byword for traditional Scotch whisky making. The whole process, malting included, is carried out by hand on the one site.
It was distilled around two and a half times from floor malted, lightly peated barley, and slowly worm tub cooled. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, gentle American oak beneath the spirit. At a youthful age the make is lively, salty and full of character. The hands on, small scale working shapes a spirit of real individuality. Demand far outstrips the small output, and bottles are keenly chased. Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn each show a different face of the one distillery. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch. The distillery has become a place of pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts. Kintyre's damp, mild climate suits a long and gentle maturation.
At 43% it is clean and characterful. A briny, oily depth with a hint of peat ride on vanilla, cream and light coconut. It is rich and layered, the fruit and salt well matched. The finish is long, waxy and briny. This is a hand made Campbeltown single malt.
