Description
From Ian Macleod comes this Rosebank, an 18 year old from 1990, drawn from cask 611 and bottled at 48%. 618 bottles in all. Rosebank was founded in 1840 by James Rankine on the banks of the canal in the central Lowlands and silenced in 1993. Ian Macleod bought the site, the trademark and the last casks from Diageo in 2017.
The spirit was run three times through copper pot stills, then cooled in worm tubs, for the elegant, floral style that crowned it King of the Lowlands. An Oloroso sherry cask wrapped the delicate spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. Past a decade and a half the florals deepen into honey and soft tropical fruit. Triple distillation strips heavy congeners, concentrating light esters such as ethyl hexanoate, giving pear and apple notes. Water came from the Carron Valley, feeding a light, ester rich Lowland spirit.
At its natural 48% it is concentrated and honeyed. The Oloroso brings dried fruit, fig and a nutty depth, and honeysuckle and lemon zest meet soft vanilla and honey from the cask. Soft citrus and orchard fruit sit behind the sweetness. It closes long, floral and honeyed. This is a finite pour from the King of the Lowlands.
