Porto Niepoort TAWNY in Geschenkbox

This is the standard Tawny from Niepoort, the Douro house long run by the family behind the Fabelhaft label and known for a lighter, drier hand with Port. Grapes come from low-yielding vineyards in the Cima Corgo, are fermented until the wine is fortified with grape spirit, then moved to the lodges at Vila Nova de Gaia for maturation.

The wine spends around three and a half years in seasoned oak casks, where slow contact with air softens the fruit and pulls the colour toward brick-red tawny. That oxidative ageing is what shifts the profile away from fresh berries and toward dried fruit and nuts, with the small casks lending gentle warmth rather than heavy wood.

Expect delicate aromas of dried apricot and crystallised orange peel over a nutty base, a supple mid-palate and a warm spirity finish. Serve lightly chilled as a digestif, alongside dark chocolate, or with a wedge of hard cheese and a handful of walnuts.
