Description
Niepoort built its reputation on old cask-aged Tawnies, and this bottling carries a 30-year age indication, meaning the average age of the wines blended into it. Fruit from the Cima Corgo is fermented and fortified in the traditional way, then the components spend decades in small old oak casks at the Vila Nova de Gaia lodges under the eye of the house blender.
Those long years in wood are the whole point. Slow, controlled oxidation concentrates the wine, drives off primary fruit and replaces it with the burnt-sugar and dried-fruit signature of serious aged Tawny, while evaporation deepens the colour to brown with a touch of green at the rim.
The nose runs to coffee, fig, date and raisin backed by roasted almond, walnut, vanilla and caramel. The palate is velvety and concentrated, sweetness held in check by fresh acidity and integrated wood, closing warm and very long. Pour it neat as a digestif, or match it with dark chocolate, hard cheese or a good cigar.
