A powerful, unsweetened Demerara off the Port Mourant double wooden pot still, dense with licorice, anise, leather and tobacco, finished in port casks, tropically aged sixteen years and bottled at 61.4%.
Description
This Port Mourant from the El Dorado Rare Collection is a single still Demerara, drawn off the legendary double wooden pot still that gives this Guyanese rum its name and its PM marque. Built of native greenheart wood, Port Mourant produces the heaviest, oiliest and most pungent Demerara profile of all, a backbone of the old Royal Navy blends, and this is its dry, full proof expression with nothing added.
Distilled in 1999 and tropically aged sixteen years before a finishing period in port casks, it is dark and brooding: polished wood, roasted barrel and licorice on the nose, then anise, leather, tobacco and dried fruit across a woody, drying palate, finishing on leather, roast and tobacco. At 61.4% it is concentrated and demands patience, opening with plenty of air or a few drops of water. This is a rum for experienced drinkers who already know the dense, wood driven Demerara style and want it raw, oily and unsweetened.
