Description
This is a single grain Port Dundas, chosen and bottled by Claxton's, a 15 year old from 2006, drawn from cask C21021 and bottled at 58.1%. 299 bottles in all. Port Dundas was one of Glasgow's two grain distilleries, raised in 1811 at the highest point in Glasgow and closed by Diageo in 2010. It stood on the highest ground in the city, its chimney visible for miles.
Made from a wheat mash drawn on Loch Katrine water and run through the distillery's continuous Coffey stills, this is a smooth, low flavour spirit built for long ageing. Ex-Bourbon American oak shaped it, gentle wood that flatters light grain. Well into its second decade, the spirit has softened and the cask sweetness come forward. The light make leaves room for the oak sugars and vanillin to come forward.
Bottled at a cask strength 58.1%, it is rich. Creme brulee from the caramelised hemicellulose, lifted by the wood gives vanilla and a creamy coconut from the oak, over the orchard and tropical fruit of mature grain. A touch of warm spice lifts the creamy body. The finish runs long, creamy and gently spiced. This is a relic of the city's great grain distilling age.
