Description
Single grain Port Dundas, picked by Whisky Import Nederland, a 20 year old grain, from 2000 and bottled at 57.4%. The Glasgow grain distillery Port Dundas, first run in 1811 beside the Forth and Clyde Canal in Glasgow, was a landmark Glasgow grain works until closed and cleared after 2010. It once absorbed its neighbours to stand as the biggest distillery in Scotland.
Port Dundas made its whisky on wheat and malted barley, drawn off tall continuous column stills to give a light grain spirit that takes oak quickly. Finishing in a Port pipe laid a plummy, red berry note over the grain. A decade and a half in oak knits cask and spirit, building a creamy, sweet make. The light make leaves room for the oak sugars and vanillin to come forward.
At a natural 57.4% it is bold and full. Plum and red berry come from the Port wine, while creme brulee from the caramelised hemicellulose, lifted by the wood gives vanilla and a creamy coconut from the oak, over a clean, fruity grain base. A gentle spice and polished oak frame the sweetness. The close is soft, oily and warm. This is a finite drop from a vanished Lowland grain distillery.
