Description
This official Old Pulteney single malt matured to 10 year old, from 2010 and bottled at 46%. Established in 1826 by James Henderson in Pulteneytown, Wick, Pulteney is the maritime malt of the far north. Old Pulteney is known the world over as the Maritime Malt.
It was worked through Pulteney's boil ball stills, fed by Loch Hempriggs, before long maturation by the sea drew in its coastal character. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, lending honey and vanilla under the salt. At this age the spirit is fresh and briny, the citrus and vanilla bright. The spirit takes colour and sweetness slowly in the cool far north. Casks rest within sight of the harbour that once shipped herring across Europe. The make is clean and waxy, a style built over nearly two centuries by the sea. Caithness sits at the very top of mainland Scotland, exposed to the North Sea. The distillery passed through several owners before Inver House took it on.
At 46% it is smooth and honeyed. Brine and a honeyed wax sit alongside light vanilla from the refill oak. A crisp apple and a sea salt edge lift it. It finishes clean, salty and bright. This is the seaside style that made the distillery's name.
