Bottled by van Wees, this Old Pulteney, a 12 year old from 2008, drawn from cask 17 and bottled at 56.6%. Just 691 bottles were filled. Pulteney, dating to 1826 in the herring port of Wick on the Caithness coast, Inver House has run it as a flagship malt since 1995. Water comes from Loch Hempriggs, carried by a lade Thomas Telford laid in 1807.

Distilled in Pulteney's distinctively shaped copper stills on soft Loch Hempriggs water, the make was then aged beside the North Sea for that maritime edge. An Oloroso butt held it, sherry meeting the sea salt. Past a decade the honey and wax build, knitting with the coastal salt. The northern cold draws out a slow, even maturation and a clean, bright spirit. The water runs from Loch Hempriggs along a lade Thomas Telford laid in 1807. Pulteney's stills are unlike any other, the wash still topped flat where the neck was cut.

At 56.6%, undiluted, it is bold and waxy. The Oloroso brings salted dried fruit, fig and walnut, and the refill oak lending a light vanilla, with a briny, oily edge. It is clean and bright, the coastal salt lifting the honey. Salt, honey and oak draw out the close. This is a coastal Highland malt from the edge of the country.
