Description
A distillery bottling of Old Pulteney, a 13 year old from 2010, drawn from cask 1811 and bottled at 62.5%. Pulteney, dating to 1826 in the herring port of Wick on the Caithness coast, Inver House has run it as a flagship malt since 1995. Inver House has made it the centrepiece of its single malt range since 1995.
Distilled in Pulteney's distinctively shaped copper stills on soft Loch Hempriggs water, the make was then aged beside the North Sea for that maritime edge. A refill American oak cask held it, keeping the maritime malt to the fore. Mid age brings a fuller honey and a deeper maritime note. A gentle, unhurried maturation suits the waxy, honeyed Pulteney character. A faint salinity threads the honey, the mark of long coastal maturation. Sir William Pulteney gave his name to the planned town that grew around the harbour. The spirit carries an oily weight unusual among Highland malts.
At cask strength 62.5% it is muscular and oily. The refill oak lending a light vanilla runs under a salty maritime note. It is rounded and deep, the maritime note woven in. The finish is deep, oily and maritime. This is a far northern malt shaped by sea air.
