Description
La Maison du Whisky bottled this Old Pulteney single malt at 19 year old, from 2004, drawn from cask 239 and bottled at 56.7%. Just 204 bottles were filled. Set in the herring port of Wick on the Caithness coast, Pulteney has distilled since 1826. Robert Cumming brought the distillery back to life in 1951 after two decades silent.
Distilled in Pulteney's distinctively shaped copper stills on soft Loch Hempriggs water, the make was then aged beside the North Sea for that maritime edge. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, gentle American oak beneath the brine. Past eighteen years the wax deepens and the maritime note turns gentle and rounded. Refill oak holds back its sweetness, letting the distillery's coastal character lead. Casks rest within sight of the harbour that once shipped herring across Europe. The make is clean and waxy, a style built over nearly two centuries by the sea.
Bottled at a cask strength 56.7%, it is rich. The refill oak lending a light vanilla, with sea salt and a coastal tang. The mouthfeel is oily, the honey carried on a waxy body. A gently briny finish lingers warm. This is a honeyed coastal malt from Caithness.
