Description
This official Longrow single malt, a 14 year old Campbeltown malt and bottled at 46%. Springbank, distilling since 1828 in Campbeltown, is still owned by the Mitchell family, five generations on. Production is tiny by modern standards, a fraction of a large Speyside distillery.
This was floor malted, peated hard and double distilled for Longrow, and run into cast iron worm tubs. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood adding a light honeyed sweetness. By this age the maritime weight rounds into a richer, fuller malt. Coastal warehousing gives the malt its briny, mineral lift. Few distilleries keep so much of the old craft alive under one roof. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world, with more than thirty distilleries at its peak. Today just three distilleries survive in the old Kintyre whisky town. The maritime warehouses by the sea lend the malt its briny, oily depth.
At 46% it is clean and characterful. Heavy smoke over brine and wax meet vanilla, honey and coconut from the cask. It is deep and complex, the maritime spirit shining through. The close is rich, fruit over a saline depth. This is a tarry, coastal Campbeltown malt.
