Lagavulin 12 Years Old (Special Releases 2011)

A cask strength 12, this was the 2011 Special Release. Lagavulin was built in 1816 on the bay that gives it its name, on southern Islay.

The peated spirit comes off the stills slowly, gaining body. Twelve years in ex-Bourbon, bottled at full strength, give a fierce, direct smoke.

Bottled without dilution at 57.5%. Guaiacol and other phenols drive the coastal smoke, the ex-Bourbon adding vanilla. Tasting notes take in a kippery note, citrus, chocolate, a medicinal edge, a mossy note and smoke. A cask strength Special Release.
