Description
Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture was a single malt distillery whose output was shaped by small pot stills, Golden Promise barley and a heavy reliance on Oloroso sherry casks. Cask #4556, distilled in 1980, spent 33 years in an Oloroso sherry butt before La Maison du Whisky bottled it in 2013 for France.
Three decades and more in a sherry butt delivers the full Karuizawa character: dark dried fruit, bitter chocolate, old leather and warm spice, concentrated by long maturation in quality Spanish wood. Bottled at 60.3% cask strength, the La Maison du Whisky bottling is one of several French market single casks that the independent bottler selected from the closed Nagano distillery, connecting a significant chapter of Japanese whisky history to European collectors.
