Description
Karuizawa was a Nagano Prefecture distillery operating from 1956 until its closure in 2000 and subsequent demolition in 2016. Driven by small pot stills, imported Golden Promise barley and heavy Oloroso sherry maturation, the distillery produced single malts of deep colour and concentrated dried-fruit character that have become among the most collected whiskies in the world. Cask #7975 was distilled in 1984, matured for 28 years in an Oloroso Sherry Cask and bottled in 2012 by La Maison du Whisky for the French market at 59.3% cask strength.
Twenty-eight years in an Oloroso cask in Nagano's cool mountain environment produced the distillery's characteristic dark profile: dried cherry, figs, fruitcake and leather, with warm wood spice building through the finish. The French market release by La Maison du Whisky represents one of the independent bottler's regular selections from the Karuizawa estate, drawn during the period when the remaining cask inventory was being methodically released.
