Description
Karuizawa distillery operated in Nagano Prefecture from 1956 until its closure in 2000, using small pot stills and a high proportion of Golden Promise barley under the ownership of Mercian. The site was demolished in 2016, and each surviving single cask release has become a collector piece. This expression was distilled in 1996, matured for 21 years and released in 2017 specifically for the German market as a single cask, cask strength bottling.
The cask was an Oloroso sherry vessel, the format that defined Karuizawa's house character across the great majority of its releases. Twenty-one years of contact with sherry-seasoned wood draws out intensely concentrated dark fruit, prune and raisin over bitter chocolate and dried leather, all framed by the distillery's typical savoury spice. At 61% the spirit is dense and richly textured.
