A seven-year Martinique agricole single cask from fresh cane juice on a creole column, ex-bourbon aged and bottled cask strength at 51.8%, dark and spice-driven with prune, red fruit, coffee, chocolate and oak.
Description
HSE, or Habitation Saint-Etienne, is a Martinique house known for its cask finishes and vintages, and this Foret de Montpensier is a single cask from 2015 bottled at full strength. It is distilled from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice on a creole column, then aged in ex-bourbon oak that takes the profile somewhere darker than the usual bright agricole.
Seven years of tropical maturation builds a wood-forward, spice-driven character. The nose is woody and fruity with coffee and spice, the palate dark and barrel-led with prune, red fruit, coffee and chocolate over spicy oak, and the finish carrying dried fruit, spice and more barrel. Unsweetened and bottled at 51.8%, it leans richer and more roasted than a classic blanc-derived vieux while keeping the dry, spice-forward agricole backbone, a structured single cask best taken neat or with a drop of water.
