A smoked coffee rum from Hacienda Coloma in Colombia, eight years old and unmistakably coffee forward, pouring espresso, dark chocolate and tonka over a smoky, woody base that reads closer to cold brew than classic rum.
Description
Hacienda Coloma's Coffee Smoked Rum is a flavoured Colombian bottling that puts coffee and smoke first and rum character second. Distilled from molasses and aged eight years in ex bourbon casks at 42%, it draws on Colombia's coffee growing identity, layering smoked beans over the cocoa and oak you would expect from the country's ron. The nose is dark and roasted, dark chocolate, woodsmoke and a volatile edge giving way to deep coffee.
The palate is built around real, creamy coffee, with smoke, wood and a nutty tonka bean note running through to a finish of espresso, bitter orange and more oak. This is honestly a coffee led curiosity rather than a traditional sipper, the kind of bottle that prompts the question of whether it is rum or coffee liqueur, and it leans hard toward the former in flavour while staying drier than most coffee liqueurs. It suits drinkers who want a smoky, roasted, dessert leaning pour or a base for after dinner cocktails.
