A cask strength single cask from Hacienda Coloma in Colombia, this molasses rum spent time in a coffee liqueur cask that layers brown sugar, tropical fruit and a smoky, roasted edge over a punchy, spirit driven 50.3% frame.
Description
Hacienda Coloma sits among the small estate distilleries of Colombia, and this 2008 single cask is bottled by the distillery itself. The Spanish-style base is molasses and light in spirit, so the interest here comes almost entirely from an unusual coffee liqueur cask finish and the decision to bottle at full strength.
That finish leaves its mark. Spice, brown sugar and ripe tropical fruit open the nose alongside a lively alcoholic lift, while the palate turns darker and a touch smoky, with roasted barrel notes and more tropical fruit. It closes warm and sweet, the coffee cask reading as richness rather than a dry espresso bite. At 50.3% it carries real heat, so a little water helps, and while the sugar status is not stated this drinks as a bold, dessert leaning curiosity rather than a quiet sipper.
