Description
Gratien & Meyer has made sparkling wine in Saumur since 1864, and this Brut Rose is a Loire Cremant built the traditional way, with the second fermentation and lees ageing taking place in bottle. The blend is led by the region's signature Cabernet Franc for red fruit and colour, filled out with Chardonnay for structure, Grolleau for lift and a little Chenin Blanc for freshness. Gentle pressing and time on the lees give the fine bead and the soft, faintly bready texture that sets a good Cremant apart from simple tank fizz.
The wine shows a bright, delicate rose with salmon lights and a fine perlage. The nose leads with fresh raspberry, redcurrant and wild strawberry over white flowers, almond and a subtle brioche edge. The palate is dry and refreshing with balanced acidity and a delicate mineral thread, closing long with gentle fruit. Serve chilled at around 6 degrees in a white wine glass. It works as an aperitif and alongside salmon starters, shellfish, light poultry and red-fruit desserts.
