Description
Duncan Taylor's Single Cask label presents individually selected bourbon and sherry casks at natural strength, working through the firm's deep broker held inventory. The Aberdeen based bottler operates the programme alongside its Octave finishing range, with the Single Cask line favouring direct bourbon and sherry maturations without finishing transfers. This Glenrothes 9 Years Old, distilled in 2013 and bottled in 2023 at 54.4% from cask 499531, runs to a generous 728 bottle outturn for European markets.
Nine years in an active bourbon cask develops the classic American oak signature at speed: vanillin from lignin breakdown, lactones (cis and trans) producing coconut and creamy oak, and ellagitannins building structure without the heavier tannic load European oak would deliver. A 728 bottle outturn suggests either a first fill barrel pair or a larger hogshead format that retained volume well. The 54.4% strength sits comfortably without pressing the cask's youth too hard.
The nose lifts fresh fruit and honey with vanilla and faint coconut, the active bourbon cask clearly framing rather than dominating the spirit. The palate moves through cooked pear, lemon curd and a new wood lift signalling first fill chemistry, with the 54.4% strength sitting comfortably without scorching. The finish is medium long with a clean American oak grip, the cask in active extraction at this age but holding the spirit's Speyside character in balance.
