Description
Brühler Whiskyhaus presents the Còmhlan 4.0 release as part of a Gaelic themed bottling series, with Còmhlan translating loosely as company or gathering, using the 100ml format characteristic of the firm's sample sized programmes. The German retailer and bottler operates from Brühl near Cologne with its own bottling line. This Glenrothes 18 Years Old, vatted from Oloroso casks and bottled in 2018 at 57%, runs to 567 bottles in 100ml format for the German market.
Eighteen years in Oloroso casks sits in the rich middle window for sherry maturation. The casks' first fill activity is well developed and European oak tannin contribution has matured into structure rather than aggression. The residual Oloroso sherry residue has fully integrated through accumulated cask interaction, while lignin's breakdown delivers vanillin and syringaldehyde alongside hemicellulose's furfural chemistry. The cask's sotolon contributes the savoury walnut depth characteristic of well integrated Oloroso.
On the nose, chocolate sits with dried fruit and a citric lift, oily honey and cooked fruit threading through alongside polished oak. The palate moves through fig, raisin and a developing leathery quality, with 57% strength delivering the cask's accumulated chemistry without astringency. Cocoa nib bitterness emerges mid palate. The finish runs long and gently tannic, European oak holding the spirit's Speyside fruit in tight balance against the cask's oxidative chemistry.
