Description
Gordon & MacPhail's Connoisseurs Choice Cask Strength tier presents the range's traditional single cask focus at undiluted strength, distinct from the softer Connoisseurs Choice releases historically targeting a lower abv. The Elgin firm has operated continuously since 1895, with Connoisseurs Choice running as the longest unbroken indie programme in the trade since 1968. This Glenrothes 30 Years Old, distilled in 1988 and bottled in 2019 from cask 16544 at 58.5%, runs to 200 bottles released into European markets.
Thirty years in a refill bourbon cask produces a profile fundamentally led by distillery character. The cask's first fill activity exhausted under previous tenancy, the wood contributes through accumulated secondary chemistry: lignin's slow breakdown delivers syringaldehyde and vanillin at attenuated levels, lactones produce coconut and creamy oak through cumulative contact, and ellagitannins build structure gradually. The 58.5% strength reflects relatively dry warehousing across the long maturation.
On the nose, hay barn warmth sits with honey, vanilla pod and fresh apple, the cask's gentle second life contribution clearly framing the spirit. A faint cooked vegetable depth threads through. The palate moves through cooked pear, lemon curd and a clean toasted oak undertone, with 58.5% strength delivering distillery character with measured cask interference. The finish is long and softly drying, the cask leaving the spirit's preserved Speyside fruit clearly at the front.
